But building the future of food requires far more than scientists alone.
The sector needs food technologists, biologists, bioprocess engineers, nutrition experts, sensory scientists, regulatory professionals, manufacturing specialists, market researchers, designers, communicators, investors, and partnership builders.
The better question is not:
“Which alternative-protein job should I apply for?”
It is:
“Where can my existing skills help solve a meaningful problem?”
Beyond the laboratory
Alternative-protein companies need people across:
Technical knowledge matters, but so does the ability to connect science with products, costs, consumers, manufacturing realities, and markets.
Start with the problem—not the job title
This is still an evolving sector. Many future roles may not yet have familiar titles or clearly defined career paths.
Students can begin by asking:
Research projects, internships, industry challenges, startup collaborations, and conversations with professionals can often provide more direction than searching only for conventional vacancies.

The tool is thoughtfully organised across plant-based meat, cultivated meat, and fermentation-derived proteins, helping students, recent graduates, and career switchers understand the different production pathways, job types, required skills, and educational routes within the sector. Its interactive career maps connect stages of production with the roles and capabilities needed to move an alternative-protein company forward.
