Cultivated meat patent landscape scale, categories, and patent-family activity

Cultivated-meat patents contain valuable clues about where innovation is happening, which technical challenges companies are trying to solve, and how the sector is evolving. But this information is often buried in dense filings, overlapping claims, and complex patent families.

At Altruistic Innovations, we are building an independent open-research initiative to make this landscape easier to understand and more useful to researchers, startups, investors, and ecosystem partners.

The scale so far

Across six years of filings, we identified approximately 300 patents from nearly 100 companies. So far, 252 patents have been decoded across seven technology categories, including bioprocessing, scaffolds, cell-line engineering, cultivated fat, growth media, downstream processing, and cost reduction.

What we are looking for

We are moving beyond patent counts to examine:

Where technical activity is concentrating
Which challenges repeatedly appear across the value chain
How companies are building broader technology platforms
What prosecution history reveals about filed versus granted claims
Where possible gaps and underexplored opportunities may exist

The tool behind the research

Reviewing hundreds of dense patents manually was not practical, so we built the CM Patent Skimmer—a purpose-built application that helps organise filings, classify technologies, review claims and prosecution histories, and identify patterns across the dataset.

The tool was developed from scratch by Binoop V, with research contributions from Ramon Veloso, P.E.I. and Aswin Cheruvambra.

A living research project

This work is still in progress. We are continuing to expand the database, validate classifications, examine patent families, and refine the patterns emerging from the analysis.

As the project develops, we will share selected insights, visualisations, and observations from the cultivated-meat patent landscape.
